THE GRASS EATING TIGER

The young tiger was walking up and down with nervous and fast steps in his cage, behind the railings. Somehow somebody was squeezing his heart with a barbed wire rope today. The sun had risen and set a lot of times since he had been locked up in this cage. He was about one month old. The hunters had caught him when had gone for a walk in the forest one day and they had sold him to this zoo. He was as tall as a fairly large cat. He grew up and got srong as time passed. His cage wasn’t tiny but he didn’t want to live here. He would like to be free and to reach the forest, whose name he started to forget and where he longed for, and he would like to direct his life. People were crowding into there, were standing in front of the cage and were watching him for a lot of minutes with full of admiration.

When the visitors lessened that night – fall, the keeper cleaned and washed the cage. He left a half sheep as dinner into the cage. He locked the door and went away. While his keeper was locking the door and going away, there was a flash of lightning in the young tiger’s mind. The lock’s fitting into its hole and the key’s voice while locking was unusual. If his quite sensitive ears weren’t misleading him, the door hadn’t been locked properly. After eating the meat left into the cage, he started his turns again. The visitors started to increase again. The people had eaten their dinner and they were going to parks and gardens to enjoy and relax. The trouble in the young tiger’s heart had gone away and away and it had trapped into the key’s hole. At midnight, if he also was lucky, he would try to run away from the cage and would try running towards his freedom.

It had completely got dark; it had been a long time after the midnight had passed. There was nobody around. The young tiger pulled hard quickly the door with his strong paws. The door, which hadn’t bee locked properly, opened easily. He went out of the cage quickly. He took the road on the right. This road was ending in the wood further. Walking up and down in the cage wasn’t similar to running outside. He had got quite tired. After he stopped to have a rest, he jumped over the zoo’s wall. He disappeared in the darkness by running towards the forest.

The young tiger passed mountains, hills and he drank cold water. After three days and three nights, while the sun was rising in the morning, he arrived at the big forest, where he was caught and taken when he was too young. He was free now, he was bubbling over with joy. He realized that he was hungry while he was walking joyfully. He hadn’t eaten anything since the day he had run away. He had only drunk water. His keeper used to bring him meat day and night. Before the hunters had caught him, his mother used to feed him. However, life was too different in this immense forest. There was neither his mother nor his keeper now. This was something that he couldn’t think before he ran away from the cage: How would he feed himself?

He saw a deer in the grassy place further while he was thinking like this and walking. The deer sometimes looked around him and then started eating grass again. The deer started running immediately. Two tigers jumped from the bush nearby at the same time. The deer had been covered from four sides when two more tigers stood before him soon. It was obvious that the tigers had laid a trap to catch the deer. The best defense was attack. The brave deer rushed forward with a last effort. He butted terribly the nearest tiger with his sharp horns. The tiger tumbled down within blood. He turned to right a little. He wanted to but the second tiger in front of him too. However, he couldn’t hit. The tigers coming after him had reached. It was impossible to fight with three tigers although the deer was strong. The tigers tumbled the deer down by hitting with their strong paws, they killed and ate him. Then they went away. The young tiger was petrified at his place. He was looking with unbelievable eyes. What he saw was brutality but the rules of the forest were like this. The weak became food for the stronger. “Namely” he said, “the tigers feed themselves like this. Because I am a tiger too, I should hunt and eat the living things. I can’t kill the other animals to feed myself. No one made me get used to kill. I don’t know killing and I don’t believe in the necessity of killing. The deer used to feed himself by eating grass. It was strong enough. The animals eating grass had been strong. I have no other choice; I will either stay hungry or eat grass. Let the others say “does a tiger eat grass” let them say “is it possible to be a grass eating tiger” “.

One month passed. The grass eating tiger couldn’t find the peace he looked for in the forest. The tigers accepted him but the life in the forest was completely inappropriate for the grass eating tiger. Why were they suddenly getting attacker when they saw a deer, a roe or a rabbit? They had been programmed to kill; they had to kill to live. At this sight there was a tiger living by eating grass, this also had to be thought. While the grass eating tiger was wandering in the forest one day, he met a rabbit. He was surprised with the rabbit’s not running away when he saw the tiger. Amazing! The rabbit was coming towards him. He wanted to step aside but he couldn’t. His feet had become stiff. The rabbit hit the grass eating tiger and fell onto his back. Then he stood up from where he fell and touched the tiger’s face, caressed his cheeks. He asked: “Are you the grass eating tiger. The grass eating tiger couldn’t say a word. He was shocked.

After the rabbit said “You are surely the grass eating tiger. Your mouth doesn’t smell of bload like the other tigers. Look, grass eater, I have heard your reputation. You can’t get used to the forest, you should return to the zoo. As I heard, the tigers had killed some animals in front of your eyes and they had wanted to make you get used to killing. If you can’t get used to killing, the tigers will kill you. Listen to me and go away from here” he wanted to go away but he fell off a hole, which was a little further. The grass eating tiger took the rabbit out of the hole and when he scrutinized his face, he saw that his eye sockets were empty. This rabbit didn’t have eyes. He considered “a blind rabbit”. He took him on his back, took and left him to his hole.

The grass eating tiger couldn’t help crying when he found the blind rabbit dead in his hole the following day. The tigers, which haven’t touched the blind rabbit so far, had envied him when they saw him going on the grass eating tiger’s back and had killed him. The grass eating tiger’s heart was full of hatred. That was too much now. What had they wanted from the poor rabbit? The grass eating tiger plunging into the tigers by running at the last speed, staked more than thirty tigers. “It’s easy to kill a blind rabbit, come and kill me if it’s easy”. What the tigers wanted was already this. They would infuriate the grass eating tiger and make him attack them and then they would pull him to pieces. There was always many a slip twixt the cup and the lip. It suddenly got dark and started to rain heavily. There were flashes of lightning and thunderbolts were falling. The tigers dispersed but the grass eating tiger didn’t run away. He waited until he got soaked. After half an hour the rain stopped. The sun shone, and the land brightened up. The grass eating tiger wandered there until midnight. When he saw that there were no passersby, he got bored and went away. The matter of forest was over. He was determined to return to the zoo now.

After a few days, his keeper found him waiting in front of the cage. The grass eating tiger would enter the cage a few minutes later and would reply the keeper from inside “here is my home, I’m a cage tiger. I can’t go to the forest even if you wanted. There hadn’t been a place for me” while he was locking him in and said “the lock has just been changed, you can’t try to run away again, because it’s impossible.” The young tiger’s heart got full of pleasure when a female tiger was brought to his cage two months later. They immediately became partners and close friends. The day and days passed, time passed and they had two babies. He became cheerful, happy and his heart was full of peace and the young tiger was walking up and down quietly and slowly behind the iron railings.

Kaplanların beklediği buydu zaten. Ot yiyen kaplanı çileden çıkarıp  üstlerine saldırtacaklar sonra  parça parça edeceklerdi. Evdeki hesap her zaman çarşıya uymazdı.

THE OCTOPUS

Our dear world; which is turning around silently somewhere in the universe, which is full of mysteries, secrets and a lot of unknown. The living creatures, which you have allowed to live on you, survive and take shelter for ten thousands of years, existing maybe only on you with everything of them. The idealists with their genuine talent of thought, with their power of imagination; who are possible to appear always and everywhere with their stubbornness and by leaving the normality of the life, which they have to live with pleasure, desire; and by getting a little over the normality to know an unknown, to help the solutions of problems and assimilating some kinds of efforts, searches for the benefit of that normalitists who they left behind.

Although a young octopus travelled a lot of places on the blue sea, the things he saw weren’t strange to him; he was indifferent to the things he saw as if he had seen them before and the motivating passion occurring in his thought, made him decide to reach the source, the spring of the river when he first realized it, which was flowing into the sea.

The young octopus started to move forward slowly. He could always have the chance to watch closely the trees, the grass, the flowers, the birds and the large and small living creatures by the river because he was taking pains to swim on the surface. As the days passed one after the other, the broadness of the river started to become narrow, the water started to flow a little more wildly and the slope started to increase. Since the young octopus was swimming towards the stream, he realized that he started to be some more compelled every passing day. If he didn’t suffer the difficulty and leave himself, he would be able to return to the sea. However, this was a matter that he wouldn’t be able to do. Now that he was an idealist and he had come till here for the sake of an idea, returning back could never be possible.

When the young octopus arrived at the side of the snowy mountain, which was difficult to see from faraway, a waterfall; whose water was falling from quite high, appeared. He had to cross this waterfall and go on his way, but how? A few attempts he made showed that it was impossible for now. Anyway he was tired. He had come till here without stopping, and by exerting himself to the utmost for days. He thought “I should relax for a while, gain my energy; when I believe that I can cross this waterfall, I will come and cross it and go on my way. I will take one of the paths I saw yesterday while I was coming, I will look for a place where I will be able to pass my days in peace. Let the waterfall wait for now.”

The young octopus returned back and took one of the paths. He reached a lake in the end by saying this or that way. The young octopus’ life in the lake lasted quite long. Actually time wasn’t very important for an idealist. Let the time pass. What was important was to be able to use the time skillfully. You would always improve and show progress in point of thought. You already had this idealism from birth. The conditions would force you to this whether you wanted or didn’t. When you started to support an idea, namely when you became an idealist, you would think carefully of your past and you would realize and be surprised that even how the unhappy, pessimistic, desperate days, which you don’t want to remember now, had educated you, and had made you experienced.

Several years passed and the young octopus had grown up and had become a mature octopus by the passing years. He always had good relationships with the living creatures in and around the lake; he had had quite a lot of accumulation of knowledge by adding his observations on the things they told. Everything was very well; perhaps it would be much better if the peole hadn’t pitched a camp near the lake. As soon as the octopus saw the people, he had listened to his common sense saying “be careful”, he had withdrawn to his cave at the bottom of the lake. He was passing his days in his cave; he was sometimes touring at the depth of the lake. On some days he saw a few boats on the lake but he couldn’t do anything more than watching the people’s in the boats rowing from the depth of the lake while swimming.

One day, while a boat was going near to the middle of the lake, it suddenly got dark. A heavy rain started. The wind blowing gradually harder was building big waves on the lake. The efforts of the people on the boat who were trying to escape from the storm were useless. They weren’t able to prevent their boat from capsizing and sinking. The octopus had felt the storm in advanced; he had taken the risk to be seen by the people on the boat and he had come a few metres close to the boat. He had covered two people, who were flopping about when the boat sank, with his strong arms, had come to the surface to prevent them drowning and started to swim quickly towards the shore. After leaving the unconscious people to a safe place, the octopus withdrew to his cave in the depth of the lake.

On the following ten days after this event, the octopus, who couldn’t see any boats on the surface of the lake, came to the surface because he thought that the people might have gone and he looked at the shore, where the camp was, from far away. The first thing that called his attention was the huge, iron boats. The people had also built wooden sheds near the tents, where the camp was pitched. There were lots of people on the shore. He started to swim towards the branch, which let the superfluous water of the lake float into the river. He was planning to come out of the lake going without making the people realize. However, when he reached the exit, he realized with sadness that there were barbed wires around, which were preventing him going. He was afraid of making a mistake. He could pull the wires to pieces, throw away and go on his way. There were the possibilities of getting injured and being undersized. The waterfall on the river was already a big problem on his way. It wouldn’t be proper to be powerless after crossing the waterfall.

On the following days the surface of the lake suddenly got into action. The ships that the people made by putting together the pieces, which they brought till the lake shore by lorries, started to move constantly. The divers started dive from the ships and examine the bottom of the lake. The harpoons that were in the divers’ hands would direct to the octopus as soon as it was seen. There was a huge octopus with eight arms, each of whose length was nearly five metres, and the one who would kill this octopus would be rewarded. It was necessary to think now. This octopus, who was wanted to be killed, saved certainly two people’s lives in a stormy weather. They had seen the octopus before they fainted and they informed the others too, there was even a reward. It is necessary to consider this situation as a labyrinth without an exit.

The octopus had understood that it was impossible to live in the lake now. Although all his goodwill, the people wouldn’t let him search some more in this lake. It was also unnecessary to live more in this lake. The things he learnt were enough and more than enough. The octopus got out of his cave with rancor. He came with a terrible speed out to the water surface just opposite the ships being anchored in front of the camp. He was puffing up and up and was causing artificial waves on the lake as he was saying “you have been looking for me for days, here I am and I’m not afraid of you”. He suddenly directed to his left. He entered the branch by pulling the barbed wires at the exit of the lake to pieces under the amazed looks of the people on the shore and he reached the river after a while. He came before the waterfall by withstanding easily to the river’s stream and he went up by holding his both arms out and by holding of the rocks there.

On the following days the octopus continued the intensive efforts to reach the source of the river. He was passing in difficulty through the gorges at the sides of the mountain where the source existed and he was moving forward step by step at the places where the depth didn’t let him swim. The rain falling on the sides of the mountains was turning into snow because of the weather’s getting gradually cold and trembling in the ice cold water under the snow was teaching him how difficult the life was in the mountains. When he started to think that it was impossible to go more forward, he found the source of the river. The source was coming out of rocks, it was coming out of a place like a cave and it was appearing on the earth.

The octopus summarized the topic: “Now that the source had been here. It comes out to the earth from that narrow place, it is fed by the rain and snow water, it goes down till the waterfall by gathering some of the little rivers’ water. After passing the waterfall, the water gathering a lot of branches from both sides gradually grows and it reaches the sea, where I was born, as a river and integrates with the sea. And the lake, where I lived for a long while, was nothing more than a drift of water, which let its superfluous water flow into the river by means of a branch.

On his way back, while coming closer to the waterfall, the octopus started to think. He wondered if the people would wait for him there. It was a fifty fifty possibility. Namely, they’d either wait or wouldn’t wait. It wouldn’t be definite. The octopus wasn’t absolutely frightened. Anyway, fear was the last think to be considered by an idealist in such a situation. There was no reason to be frightened. After the octopus evaluated the situation, considered what he would do after what might happen, he went down the waterfall. He went past the branch, which was connecting the lake to the river, by swimming bravely on the water.

The octopus reached the sea a few days later. He had set off years ago for the sake of an ideal when he was a young octopus; after years, he had turned back as a mature octopus. However, the ideal still wasn’t an ideal. An idealist should teach the others the things he learnt and should acquaint them too. As well as you couldn’t say you have enough knowledge for yourself so you wouldn’t need to learn more, you couldn’t also say you were more knowledgeable than the others; let the others not learn the things I knew. After relaxing for a while, the octopus wanted to start his attempts. He would teach the others the things he learnt and he would acquaint them too. Until there would be no other knowledge in his mind what he knew but the others didn’t…

AHTAPOT

THE COLT RACING WITH HIS SHADE

The city hippodrome where the horse races were made was too crowded. The grandstand was jammed with people. The races would be held in which the big prize would be given to the one coming first that Sunday as it was given every Sunday. The biggest candidate was a horse called Black Bomb. He was the only and the unique dominant of the races which had been held in that city for nearly two years. He was always the hugest of the horses with his jet-black colour, big eyes and with his height like a giant. It was guessed that he wouldn’t have the championship snatched for a long time.

The other racehorses were Storm, Goblin, Paw, Surprise, Strong, Rabbit and Yekta. Yekta was attending a race like that for the first time and he was quite excited. He had been trained well at the racehorse - farm though, but his being young and inexperienced made him feel frightened. What if he wouldn’t be able to come first..? He even wouldn’t like to think that. He would fall into a condition like an ordinary racehorse and then this condition might continue like that forever. Becoming the first in the races; where thousands of racing tricks were made, and where was full of ruse and intrigue, was not only being fast and strong. For instance, in some of the races Rabbit used to make rabbitness. As soon as the race started, he would come front and speed up, and would tire the horses and would give up the race. At the last plain, Black Bomb would become the first with a rashness he made. The racehorse called Paw was Black Bomb’s other helper. While the race was going on, he would take care of the horses with high performance, would hit them, would come in front of them and lessen their speed and would make Black Bomb come first in the race.

The horses lined up regularly at the starting point. As soon as the pistol’s sound was heard, eight strong horses ran forward. Rabbit, whose start was very fast, moved front immediately. Despite all his attempts, Yekta stayed at the second line. “Damn it, I have missed Rabbit..! Essentially nobody had been able to overtake Rabbit until the last flat place. I have to overtake him before coming to the middle of the race. Let’s faster, faster, Yekta…”

While the 1500 start was being passed, Rabbit was nearly 3 heights in front of Yekta, who was at the second line. “Where is Bomb, it is needed to turn back and look. Rabbit can’t finish the race with this speed. Oh, Bomb had been just behind me! What the hell is going on, what tricks are they playing? He had been hiding until the last flat place. They certainly got uneasy about me.”

The middle of the race: As the 1000 start was being passed, the racehorse called Rabbit came out of the running track and gave up the race. Yekta overtook him very fast and came to the first position. But there were 1000 meters to the end of the race and Black Bomb was coming gradually close to Yekta.

Yekta and Black Bomb entered the last flatness (the last 500 meters) with the ends only just meeting. After a breathtaking struggle, Yekta’s killing departs made him win the race with 2 heights of distance. Yekta was happy now because he was able to come first in the race although it was difficult. Yekta raced with Black Bomb and his group for many other times. He became the first at each race he participated. That city had started to become too small for him then. He had to go out, had to make his name heard in broad environments and had to win bigger races. When he won the region championship he participated, he increased the frequency of his trainings to take place in the country championship, which was going to be held one month later.

A lot of racehorses on the race - horse farm, where he was training, told Yekta about the races they had taken place at different times. Yekta listened to them very carefully. He increased his experience and his knowledge. According to Yekta there was no end of knowledge and learning. Each new knowledge would teach something new. What important was to obtain “original knowledge” by adding your own ideas to the ones you learnt. It was possible to think correctly only by knowing yourself very well. This would provide “auto control” namely the talent of controlling yourself, which was necessary for personal virtue. Auto control talent’s being regular would force the limits of perfection.

Days passed after each other. Each passing day was adding power to Yekta’s power. He had started to run faster and cross the distances in a shorter time. There had been 7 days left for the big race. In the afternoon they had made Yekta get on the lorry, which was specially prepared. The lorry set off after a short while to go to the biggest city of the country. Just as they had passed half of the way, the lorry rolled over a ditch at the edge of the way with a big noise. Then there was a deep silence. Nothing had happened to Yekta by chance. He waited his door’s being opened. There was nobody passing by. He succeeded in breaking the lock after struggling for a long time. He jumped out with fear. He went to the road. A few lights were able to be seen far away. The place where the race would be held should be there somewhere. It was also possible without the lorry. He thought to himself “I can reach there even I am on my own”. He started to run. He ran and ran…

More than an hour passed. It started to get dark and Yekta started to get surprised. What was happening? Why wasn’t it sunny all the time? Was there anything more meaningless than darkness? He had the right to be surprised. He used to train during the day and go inside before getting dark. The lights used to be on during the day and night. He had never stayed in darkness until that time. Yekta shuddered immediately after running slowly for kilometres under the moonlight. There was an indistinct figure on his left side and it was trying to overtake him. He turned his head quickly. A horse…!

Yekta thought to himself:
“Who is this? Where has he suddenly come out from? It’s not my business who he is. What important is his being about to overtake me. I won’t surely let this..! Nobody has been able to make me swallow dust. Let’s see what’s he going to do after raising my speed?” Yekta’s effort to overtake his shade lasted all night long. At dawn, while darkness was leaving his place to daylight, Yekta’s shadow was wiped away. Yekta couldn’t see it at a moment when he turned his head left. He looked right, it wasn’t there again. He looked behind and looked far behind. He thought that his rival couldn’t keep in step with him and gave up the race. He lessened his speed gradually.

Yekta continued to run some more at a slow speed for about an hour. Now the first houses of the city, where the race would be held, had started to seem. Yekta asked a packhorse he came across on his way where the hippodrome of the racehorses was. He continued his way as it was explained. As he was crossing the main street swelled with pride and holding his head high, the cars had stopped and having seen this magnificent colt in the newspapers or magazines for many times before and about whom they had read the articles written, the people in the street were applauding crazily. Making use of the hippodrome’s open door, Yekta entered inside. He had come to the running track a few minutes later. The country championship, which was 6 days later, would be held there. Yekta, who was touring with slow steps on the running track, was thinking of becoming certainly the first in that race.

His owner, who heard that the lorry bringing Yekta turned upside down, had come to the place of incident. The driver and the stableman were taken to the hospital injured. Yekta’s owner started to look for Yekta in the morning and when he heard that he had gone to the hippodrome, he went there too. When Yekta’s owner entering the hippodrome saw Yekta running with slow steps on the running track, he shouted “Yekta… Yekta…” and ran to the running track. He ran quickly and reached Yekta and embraced him around his neck. Yekta realised the situation after a short while. His owner had looked for him in this strange city and had found him.

Yekta’s owner took him to one of his friend’s racehorse farm. Yekta, who was very tired, passed that day and the following day relaxing. Starting the running trainings later, Yekta became fitter than before. He was ready now and he saw himself the luckiest to become the first.

Yekta ran like a tornado in the race. He came front with the terrible attack he made just in the first meters. He was running crazily. Turkey’s best racehorses became desperate because of his speed. He became the first with a great difference and record degree. This championship had become by the help of his combining the theoretical and practical in the best way. As a result he had achieved the perfection and had got the reputation of “unovertakeable”.

When the country champion Yekta returned back to the racehorse farm where he was born and grew up, he was welcomed with great excitement. The racehorses on the farm had watched the race on the TV in the garden and had been very happy for Yekta’s championship. Yekta was taken to England by a private plane a few months later. There was Europe Championship soon and Yekta would represent Turkey in that race. Yekta was taken to a hard training programme. His each training was getting him to improve his degree gradually and to run faster. Before a few days to the championship, Yekta’s being close to the Europe Record had made his owner happy. However, there were some people who weren’t pleased with Yekta’s condition. A few people watching Yekta by gnashing their teeth from the grandstands were signing his death edict:

“We said Yekta, Yekta and we ran into trouble. He is like a storm as if he wasn’t a racehorse. Look at the degree he has made. If he takes his last step a bit faster, it will be Europe record.”

“You are right. This race is only training. He is running alone. There is no rival to force him. If it were the real race, he would be impossible to be overtaken. Now the best racehorse in Europe is Yekta.”

A third person: “Our horse can’t overtake Yekta. It doesn’t matter whether you become the second or the last then. If Yekta doesn’t participate in the race, we will become the first. If we give him an injection tonight, he will pass away. We will get the championship award and spend it. It will also be our country’s advertisement. Advertisement will bring lots of foreign currency to the country.”

“Ok, tonight we shall go where Yekta stays. Each of us will have a poisonous injection. If Yekta runs away from one of us, he will be caught by the other one.”

At the following times of the night Yekta was distressed and troubled. Because he was troubled, he couldn’t get to sleep. He heard foot steps coming from deep. The grooms wouldn’t enter the stable at that time. Or else were the ones coming strangers? What could their aims be? Yekta didn’t think badly though and waited. He shuddered when he saw three men with clubs and injections. He was afraid. The cruel men attacked suddenly and started to hit Yekta, whose only offence was being a good racehorse, with the clubs without pitying. Being hurt, Yekta took a few steps backwards and his back leant to the wall. The men faced a harsh reaction when they attacked Yekta. Rearing up, Yekta hit one of the men over his head with his feet. The men fell down like an empty sack. Turning back, Yekta tried to hit with his back feet. The blow couldn’t hit the mark but two men decided to take and shoulder their friend lying on the floor and then they disappeared.

Then picking up the injections and the clubs on the floor and putting them into a bag, Yekta threw them into dustbin. He didn’t want the event to be known by anyone. Evil shouldn’t be spread. There was more evil than the goodness in the world. It was easy to do harm, what difficult was to do kindness. Yekta had succeeded in doing kindness that time. The men had escaped. They might not hurt anyone again. Was the man kicked still alive? He wouldn’t be able to know that. People would put him under detention for a short while even the man was alive. Not training for a few days meant for Yekta to lose the Europe Championship. This situation made Yekta psychologically destroyed. There was a huge country waiting for his championship. Millions of people would be disappointed. There were his close friends, who would support him with their ideas, on the racehorse - farm. He would give the prize of Country Championship to them. The beautiful golden cups would be doubled.

As a matter of tactics, Yekta ran the first 300 meters in the middle lines. Gaining speed gradually, Yekta was running nearly in the first line. Four horses entered the last 500 meters with the ends only just meeting. Although he regressed to the fourth level just for a while, he tried his hardest while attacking with rancour as if he was treating himself cruelly when there was 50 meters to finish the race and then he won it. Yekta had become the Europe Champion. Yekta was welcomed enthusiastically in his country. There was just Yekta’s news on TV and radio and in the newspaper. The broadcast establishments in Europe were broadcasting about Yekta. We saw Yekta after months – It was him – He was brought for the World Championship that was going to be held in New York. Yekta who was considered to be the champion certainly by the authorities, unfortunately was overtaken by the Australian champion and became the second. Yekta was happy at the reward ceremony while the silver medal was hung. It wasn’t easy; he had won a lot of races, had always become the first and had never been overtaken. Becoming the second fastest racehorse of the world wasn’t even the other racehorses’ dream. In fact, it wasn’t impossible to become the second of the world championship but it was too difficult. Yekta had succeeded in doing this difficulty.

After a few days Yekta started to get bored. The passing days were getting him to consider being the second as his own and this was increasing the sorrow of not becoming the first. Yekta couldn’t stand the sorrow anymore so he ran away from the racehorse farm and went to the Appalaş Mountains. He saw wild horses grazing in the meadow further while he was wandering in the Appalaş Mountains. They were Mustang horses. He went near them and asked: “Hello, would you mind my joining you? “ Gera, who was the head of the Mustangs, said ” Of course, come and join us buddy “Yekta joined the Mustangs and started to graze with them. It was good and nice there; he got closer with the Mustangs immediately. More than an hour had passed. Gera the head said he would go to the piny wood that was 10 kilometres away, he said “Let’s” and started to run. The horse herd, whose number increased to 20 with Yekta’s joining, was running fast. The one who was the strongest and who ran the fastest among the Mustang horses would become the head of the herd. It was impossible to become the head by running in the middle lines. Whenever the head was overtaken, he would lose being the head. Gera was running forward. The other horses were striving to reach him.

However, Yekta always ran at the back. When they arrived at the piny wood, he had overtaken only two horses, namely he had become the 18. Yekta didn’t want to accept that. He was a racehorse, so he was used to run on the grassy or sand track. Gera the head had said that they would go to the piny wood and he had run forward quickly and the other horses had followed him. The one who started running the last was Yekta; who even couldn’t understand what was going on, what was happening, what the piny wood was. In fact they had run on the grass but they had run on a stony place later and next they had had to run among thicket and woods. The Mustangs had already known that place very well since they had passed there a lot of times before. They knew where to step while running on the stony place, and they knew which the shortest way was while passing through the thicket and woods. Because of that Yekta thought that if he would move backward one step each kilometre, he would move backward ten steps each ten kilometres. The distance between Gera and him was already that much. Yekta never returned to the racetracks. He always stayed in the mountains among the Mustangs. The passing time gained power to Yekta’s and Gera was overtaken by him one day. Becoming the head of the Mustangs, Yekta stayed the head for many years.

THE END

GÖLGESİYLE YARIŞAN TAY

At yarışlarının yapıldığı şehir hipodromu çok kalabalıktı.

Girdiği her yarışta birinci oldu.

Her geçen gün Yekta’nın gücüne güç katıyordu.

Bir at !..

Yekta:

“ Ne demezsin. Bu sadece bir antrenman koşusu. Yalnız koşuyor, kendisini zorlayan rakibi yok. Esas yarış olsa kesinlikle geçilmez. Şu anda Avrupa’daki en iyi yarış atı Yekta. “

Bir üçüncü kişi ise:
“ Bizim at Yekta’yı geçemez.

Bunu bilemezdi. Adam yaşasa bile insanlar Yekta’yı kısa bir süre de olsa gözetim altına alırlardı. Bir, iki gün antrenman yapmamak, Yekta’nın Avrupa şampiyonu olamaması demekti. Bu durum Yekta’yı psikolojik olarak çökertirdi. Geride ondan birincilik bekleyen koskoca bir ülke vardı. Milyonlarca insanın hayali gerçek olmazdı. Yarış atı çiftliğinde arkadaşları vardı. Kendisine fikir bakımından büyük destek olan can arkadaşları.

Son 500 metreye dört at yan yana girdi. Yarışın bitmesine 50 metre kala bir aralık dördüncü duruma düşmesine karşın, hınçla ileri atılarak ciğerlerini parçalarcasına gayret gösterdi ve yarışı kazandı. Yekta, Avrupa Şampiyonu olmuştu. Yekta, ülkesinde coşkulu bir şekilde karşılandı. Gazete, radyo ve televizyon haberlerinde hep Yekta vardı. Avrupa’daki yayın kuruluşları da Yekta’dan bahsediyordu. Aylar sonra Yekta’yı Amerika’da görüyoruz. O. New York’ta yapılacak Dünya Şampiyonası için buraya getirilmişti.

Giderek artan üzüntüye dayanamayan Yekta, New York’taki yarış atı çiftliğinden kaçarak Appalaş Dağları’na gitti. Yekta, Appalaş Dağları’nda gezerken ilerdeki çimenlikte otlayan vahşi atlar gördü. Bunlar Mustang atlarıydı.

Yekta, onların yanına giderek:
“ Merhaba, beni de aranıza alır mısınız? “ diye sordu.

Mustangların başkanı olan Gera:
“ Olur tabi, gel katıl bize arkadaş “ dedi. Yekta, Mustangların arasına katılıp, onlarla birlikte otlamaya başladı. İyiydi, güzeldi buralar, Mustanglarla kaynaşıverdi.

Aradan bir saatten fazla zaman geçmişti. Başkan Gera, on kilometre ilerdeki çamlığa gidileceğini söyleyip, haydi, dedi ve koşmaya başladı. Yekta’nın katılmasıyla sayısı yirmiye ulaşan at sürüsü hızla yol alıyordu.

Yekta bu sebeplerden dolayı her kilometrede bir adım gerilese on kilometrede on adım gerileyeceğini düşündü.
