Avustralya'daki New South Wales Üniversitesi psikoloji profesörlerinden Joseph Forgas başkanlığındaki araştırma grubu tarafından yapılan çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, olumsuz düşüncelere sahip insanların aldanma olasılığı daha az görülürken, karşısındakinin kabiliyetini daha iyi değerlendirebilen bu tip kişilerin hafızası da güçleniyor.
Genel olarak olumsuz düşünceye sahip birinin, anlatılanlara karşı çevresindekilere göre daha dikkatli yaklaştığı ifade edilen araştırmada, ''olumlu düşüncenin yaratıcılığı artırdığı, esneklik, işbirliği ve mantıksal kestirimlere güvenmeyi artırdığı görülürken, olumsuz düşünce daha dikkatli olma ve dış dünyaya daha büyük bir dikkatle yaklaşımı getiriyor'' denildi.
''Australasian Science'' dergisinin kasım/aralık sayısında yer alan araştırmada ayrıca, ''üzüntü duygusunun, bilgi değerlendirme yöntemlerini istenilen en iyi sonucu almak amacıyla desteklediğinin belirlendiği'' kaydedildi.
Olumlu ve olumsuz ruh hali içindeki deneklerle yapılan araştırma, olumsuz düşüncedeki insanların ''şehir efsaneleri'' ve söylentilere inanma olasılığının daha az olduğunu, ayrıca ırk veya din temelli önyargılara daha az kapıldıklarını gösteriyor.
Olumsuz düşüncelilerin tanık oldukları bir olayı anlatırken daha az hata yaptığı da ifade edilen araştırmada, olumsuz düşüncenin daha dikkatli değerlendirme yapılması ve değerlendirmelerde daha az hata yapılması yönünde de etkili olduğu ifade edildi.
